A California rancher who organized a private Born and Raised in the U.S.A.® beef label and source verification system will be the keynoter at the OG&SP Annual Convention in Enid on January 25.
Carolyn Carey is also a founding member and CEO of Western Ranchers Beef Cooperative, a value-added beef alliance of producers in California, Nevada and Oregon. The co-op uses a certified feeder program to guarantee that all cattle have been through a minimum 45-day backgrounding and vaccination program.
After being involved in efforts to enact mandatory country-of-origin labeling, Carey decided that, rather than waiting on legislative measures, the U.S. beef industry should take advantage of market and consumer interest in a Made in the U.S.A. labeled product. "Let's just do it!" she said to herself.
So she formed a limited liability corporation that source verifies U.S. cattle and licenses use of an attractive marketing logo to producers, processors, retailers, restaurants and food service operators. Her proactive effort to designate domestically-produced beef has the endorsement of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association.
Carey and her husband run a cow-calf, stocker and hay operation in Alturas, California.
